Call of Duty is back, but did it ever really go anywhere? Well, no, but its single-player content sure did - last year’s solid Black Ops 4 lacked the series staple campaign.

The franchise’s campaigns have always served as a series of quick, fast shootouts that whisk players through expensive setpieces that showcase the sheer amount of money blown on these things. They’re essentially late-night TBS Superstation action flicks that are playable, and for what it’s worth, they do a pretty good job of scratching that itch. Advanced Warfare and Black Ops, in particular, offered some of the most engaging content found in the franchise - and Modern Warfare 2’s “No Russian” mission speaks for itself.

With this year’s reboot of Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward decided to bring back the single-player campaign mode. The gritty narrative spins a tale of international espionage that’s already causing controversy in some countries and looks to be a step in a more grounded direction for the franchise. Verdict’s out on whether or not Activision will decide to continue this trajectory, or if this is the beginning of a fresh start for the Modern Warfare brand - we’ll just have to wait and see.

So, How Long Is It?

These campaigns aren’t exactly known for their length - most can be completed in a single sitting, albeit with a little touch of the good ol’ butt numbing.

Early reports suggest that this game won’t be any different, with the campaign clocking at around seven to nine hours. Obviously, that depends on the selected difficulty level, but from the looks of it, players won’t be given too much to sink their teeth into.

Which, really, is a bit of a relief. There’s always a bit of anxiety with how long modern games can be as the medium moves towards things that take more and more time to complete. It’s nice that Infinity Ward seems content with making a self-contained, breezy campaign that can be enjoyed without being a hole to throw your time into.

That’s what multiplayer’s for, anyway!
