Activision and Infinity Ward have an early Christmas present for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players. Announced today, two new playlists are coming to Modern Warfare on Christmas Eve. The first is a special holiday Snowfight variant of Gunfight and the second is Drop Zone, the King of the Hill-esque mode mixed with abundant care packages.
Drop Zone is a two-team mode in which players fight for control of a moving location within the map. Like King of the Hill, a team accrues points by controlling moving points on the map, earning care packages along the way.
According to the announcement by Activision, earning care packages by holding a point is the only way to earn Killstreaks. It’s unclear if there are exceptions to this rule, like in previous Call of Duty games. For example, players could still unlock De-Atomizer Strikes in Infinite Warfare and MOABs and KEM Strikes in Call of Duty: Ghosts under certain circumstances.
Drop Zone hasn’t been included in a Call of Duty game since Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Prior to that, however, it was a surprisingly routine inclusion, with its first appearance being in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Drop Zone was originally released as part of a Community Playlist intended to offer experimental modes for players to try out. After two months it was removed, but fans of Drop Zone wanted it back so badly that it was readded to the game two days later.
Both the Snowfight variant of Gunfight and Drop Zone will go live in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare starting December 24 at 10:00 am PT and will be available through December 31 at 10:00 am PT. Activision is also granting Modern Warfare players a boon and will kick off a Double XP and Double Tier Earn Rate starting on December 4. This Double XP weekend will end on December 27 at 10:00 am PT. After the weekend ends, Activision will offer a tier sale so players can further leap forward in the Battle Pass.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
