Over a month ago, Call of Duty: Mobile was released to huge success and was downloaded over 100 million times in its first week. However, while the game launched with controller support, the feature was removed the day after release with no initial explanation and only a tweet responding to a concerned player confirming the feature’s removal. However, controller support is now coming back in one form or another.
On Call of Duty: Mobile’s official Reddit thread, a community update was issued regarding a variety of topics, including a Zombies mode, events and challenges, anti-cheater policies, and controller support.
According to the community update, Activision is planning to implement controller support for Call of Duty: Mobile but is currently “finalizing the specifics of how it will be working in the game,” especially regarding matchmaking. More information will be released as players near the feature’s release.
Players will likely respond positively to the upcoming reintroduction of the previously removed featured. As mentioned, controller support had been removed very suddenly the day after Call of Duty: Mobile’s release. According to VG247, Activision had expressed worry over the effect controller support would have on the game’s balance between players using traditional controllers and players using their smartphones’ touch-screen capabilities.
Activision’s position on balance makes sense, as longtime Call of Duty players using Xbox or PlayStation controllers will probably perform better on average than players using the touch-screen. Unfortunately, the feature’s removal meant that nobody could try and experience Call of Duty: Mobile in a traditional way. However, we’ll see how Activision brings back the feature going forward.
On the other end of the Call of Duty spectrum, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is now available on consoles and PC and continues to dominate in the sales charts, defeating Luigi’s Mansion 3. Like Call of Duty: Mobile and Black Ops 4 before it, Activision is continually updating the game with things like new maps and content from Battle Passes.
Call of Duty: Mobile is largely getting the same level of attention. As such, hopefully, it can be improved going forward with added features such as controller support.
