In a brand new featurette, first posted over on the PlayStation Blog, Media Molecule has chosen to showcase the ‘Grabinator’, a device designed to help you pick up and throw large objects in LittleBigPlanet 2. It might sound dull, but when you watch the trailer, featured below, you can see why it’s actually pretty darned cool.

As is the case with previous trailers for LittleBigPlanet 2, including the Sackbot Featurette and Story-Creation commercials, the Grabinator’s video is humorous and thoroughly enjoyable to watch. Media Molecule may be well known for their eccentricity and playful nature, yet every newly-released trailer still manages to surprise and delight at every corner. As you can see from the title image, the surprise this time takes the form of a cheesy TV commercial, willing you on to buy the Grabinator. It may be silly, but I had my finger ready to dial 800-555-5555 faster than you can say “Woah, that looks just like the Goron’s Bracelet from Ocarina of Time!”

When I had the opportunity to check out LittleBigPlanet 2 earlier this year at the Eurogamer Expo, I was struck by the possibilities available in the title. While I have played (and enjoyed, I might add) the original LittleBigPlanet, the sequel simply goes above and beyond in every possible respect. If I remember correctly, I heard there were around 2,500 bugs still in the title – obviously the cause for the game’s delay into 2011 – but to say it looked phenomenal even then would be a gross understatement.

And, of course, the Grabinator does nothing but add to the possibilities in-game. At a very base level, it may only be used for helping your Sackboy lift heavy objects (ala the Goron’s Bracelet) but if you like, you can create Basketball games, Baseball games… Heck, I’m not one for much creativity. If you can throw it, it’s probably something you can do in LittleBigPlanet 2.

Whether you’ll be playing, creating, or sharing your creative levels, you’ll have to wait for LittleBigPlanet 2 to be released exclusively on the PlayStation 3 on January 18, 2011 before you can purchase your Grabinator.
