Nothing lasts forever. You can have too much of a good thing. All of the tired clichés you can muster won’t quite take the sting out of this one: Destiny’s time in the spotlight is no more, its updates are at an end. Now it’s all about the Destiny 2 beta.

At the end of March, Destiny received the Age of Triumph update, which was touted as one big ‘last hurrah’ for the game. It brought the biggest Record Book in the game’s history, previous raids returning, alterations to max light levels, new armour sets and rewards and much more besides. Late last week, Bungie announced that, true to their word, this would be the last extra Destiny content (for the foreseeable future).

In the latest installment of their regular This Week At Bungie feature, Bungie posted that, following Age of Triumph, “…we’ve heard many of you asking if the current sandbox will get another design pass. Our sole focus at this time is Destiny 2.”

This isn’t to definitively rule out anything further in the future, but for now, the original Destiny is staying as it is. This way, the team can get to stoking the Hype Train for the sequel with all their gusto. Which they’re certainly making an effort to do.

Also in the latest update, the team spoke of their plans for showcasing Destiny 2 at the upcoming E3 2017. For lanyard-equipped attendees, the mission Homecoming will be on offer, as will the series’ first attack-and-defend mode, Countdown. Most importantly for fans, this year’s E3 event will be the first place to see the new subclass, Arcstrider Hunter, in playable action. If you caught the Destiny 2 Gameplay Premiere, it’s all of that plus a dash extra.

So there it is. It’s certainly been a good long run for Destiny. The game was hyped out the wazzoo prior to its September 2014 release, as the sci-fi shooter of the century. A Halo killer from the Halo developers themselves? Who wouldn’t want a slice of that? Many disgruntled fans griping about what 343 Industries did with Halo were right on board, that’s for sure. The game didn’t live up to the hype for everybody, as no game ever will, and it’s certainly had its ups and downs, but it’s a solid experience and a fitting piece of Bungie’s legacy. Let’s look ahead to the beta for the sequel, then, and feast our ogling eyes on the Arcstrider Hunter when it hits the E3 show floor.
