We haven’t seen a game in the Fight Night series in 9 long years, but according to boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, EA is currently “looking at” giving the series a revival. And given that we’re just 9 months out from a new generation of consoles, there’s a pretty good chance that a new Fight Night might pop up on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Eddie Hearn might be famous for scoring boxing’s first ever billion dollar deal, but the promoter seems to have some solid connections at EA as well. Hearn stated that he told EA they need to bring back the Fight Night franchise, because every time he tweets about a revival, it “goes crazy.” He also stressed just how often fans ask him about a new Fight Night game, and how anxious they are to get their hands on it.
When Hearn asked the publisher if they plan to revive the series, EA responded with, “We’re looking at it.” That’s certainly not a sure thing by any stretch, but Hearn is right when talking about how popular the series is, and it only makes sense that EA would eventually give it another chance.
Normally when a publisher abandons a series, the most recent title was a dud. That’s certainly not true with Fight Night though, as 2011’s Fight Night Champion was a critical success. Only about 2 million copies were sold unfortunately, which is probably the reason behind the series’ halt.
That being said, there’s certainly a market for a new game today. Many people have memories of playing the earlier entries, and nostalgia continues to be a huge driving factor in gaming. Not only that, but boxing has seen more popularity than it did in 2011, especially following 2017’s fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, as well as the tragic passing of boxing legend, Muhammad Ali.
A Fight Night game on the next generation of consoles has a chance to give players a boxing experience infinitely better than the one EA was able to make in 2011, and bringing the series back might just work out great for everyone involved. Your move, EA.
