The Borderlands series has always stood out from the crowd of FPS games with a dark and silly sense of humor that fans have come to expect. Many enjoy it–while others find it to be a little too much–but in the case of Borderlands 3, it looks like developer Gearbox is aiming to please all crowds this time around.

Borderlands 3 is the next highly anticipated game in the Borderlands series, which all contain the brash, foul-mouthed type of humor that some people find absolutely hilarious. In today’s climate, however, that characteristic Borderlands humor might not go over well with some fans if handled carelessly, so Gearbox took time at this year’s Gamescom to explain why that won’t happen.

On the subject of humor, producer Chris Brock explained that everything written for Borderlands 3 is much more thought-out and shared among much of the writing staff. “We talk about it and think about it a lot more," Brock said. “I think in the past, we’ve just kinda done stuff. But now we say ‘okay we have this joke and we want to run it by the studio.’ And the studio’s huge now – we have people 400 people in Dallas and 100 people in Quebec. So we go ‘how does this joke land with everybody?’”

Brock reaffirmed that Borderlands 3 has still been written to with all the raucous humor of Borderlands 2, but he fully believes that the team can do that without being cruel and insensitive. “We’ve all got a personal line, some of our lines will be crossed, but we have to as a team, understand that we’re putting our best foot forward,” Brock continued. “Be edgy, be funny, don’t be cruel, don’t be insensitive, be understanding, be sympathetic. We have a very diverse studio culture, and everybody wants to represent that.”

Capturing the right tone for Borderlands 3 without alienating anyone is no easy task, but it’s refreshing to see a studio so openly putting in the effort. While jokes should ideally be accessible to anyone who hears them, that’s not always possible when humor becomes selective or even downright rude to certain people.

Hopefully, the laughs in Borderlands 3 will also show any skeptics that a joke doesn’t have to upset one person for another to find it funny. There’s a common ground that, if all goes well, Gearbox can bring to its players with the launch of its third Borderlands installment.

Borderlands 3 is set to release on September 13 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
