Borderlands 3, Gearbox Software’s latest addition to the irreverent looter-shooter series, is now into its second month following release, and the majority of early-adopters have reached the end-game content. To keep things fresh, Gearbox has been releasing regular events to Borderlands 3 alongside its hotfix patches, adding better loot and unique challenges.

Signalling the end of the previous series of these events, which celebrated Borderlands’ 10 year anniversary, is the Halloween-themed Bloody Harvest. This 2-month-long event brings Haunted enemies, new legendary weapons, more Anointed loot drops and a spooky boss fight. In order to reach the heart of this content, and descend into the depths of Heck, players must first gather Hecktoplasm from new Haunted enemies across the universe.

Busting Ghosts

Player who want to take part in the Bloody Harvest event should start by heading to their Sanctuary III ship and finding Maurice wandering the decks. Speaking to Maurice will allow them to begin the “Descent into Heck” quest, which will cause the event to begin.

Once players have accepted the quest, special Haunted enemies will appear across the galaxy. These can be recognized by their weird glow, and will drop Hecktoplasm when killed. After 25 of these enemies have been defeated, and their Hecktoplasm collected, players should head back to Maurice to begin their own Descent into Heck, and if playing on a console can get a nice snap of the Heck-scape with the newly-released Photo Mode.

The Highway to Heck

With the accumulated Hecktoplasm Maurice will open a portal to the Heck dimension, allowing players to enter and take on Captain Haunt and his minions. Players should make sure they’re well-geared before entering however, as the denizens of Heck are no easy fight. Captain Haunt is a gigantic ghostly mecha-pirate, and he’s supported by undead Maliwan soldiers and deadly Rakk-O-Lanterns. For players who triumph there’s new loot up for grabs, which they’ll hopefully have room for if Gearbox still hasn’t brought out its promised inventory size fix.

Players shouldn’t feel any rush to take on Heck however, as the Bloody Harvest event will continue until December 5. Such a long run-time for a Halloween event has caused players to speculate that it will carry straight through into the games’ first DLC episode, which is expected to drop by the end of the year. This could also mean that Captain Haunt and his fellow Heck-dwellers are only the first wave of a larger series, which will unfold over the following weeks in the same manner as the 10th anniversary events.

Borderlands 3 is available to play now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
