Last year, Borderlands 3 released as an Epic Games Store exclusive, leaving many PC players quite frustrated indeed. That said, Borderlands 3’s run as an EGS exclusive was always intended to be a temporary affair, and an eventual Steam release was all but guaranteed. Now, with the game’s period of exclusivity coming to a close, Gearbox Software has finally revealed something that is sure to excite many fans: the exact date that BL3 will be available on Steam.
Specifically, Borderlands 3’s Steam release date is now confirmed for March 13, 2020. Furthermore, it is now known that cross-play will be supported across the Epic Games Store and Steam, allowing fans to engage in co-op play regardless of the platform that they may have used to purchase the game. This PC cross-play will be supported by a revamped Shift system, which the developer suggests will help players manage a multi-platform friends list.
However, Gearbox has indicated that some of Borderlands 3’s multiplayer features will not be available across platforms on the game’s Steam release date. For instance, fans that are using Steam will not be able to mail weapons in Borderlands 3 to players that are using the Epic Games Store, and vice versa, on day one. Even still, confirmation of cross-play is sure to please many fans, and it is said that any missing multiplayer features will become available over time.
All of this information was revealed during Gearbox’s recent PAX East panel, but it is certainly not all that was shared during that presentation. Indeed, Gearbox took this opportunity to reveal Borderlands 3’s second DLC, Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright and Hammerlock, which will release on March 26 and marks the return of a fan-favorite Vault Hunter.
Additionally, the developer shared the Borderlands 3 spring 2020 roadmap, which kicks off with the aforementioned DLC in March and continues with several free updates in April and May. These free updates include a revamp to BL3’s Mayhem Mode as well as a seasonal event and a brand new Takedown, and fans should expect more details on all of these offerings in the forthcoming weeks.
Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
