When it comes to legendary weapons in Borderlands 3, there is certainly no shortage of different options for fans to choose from. That said, not all BL3 legendaries are created equal, and as players spend more time with the title, the best Borderlands 3 weapons come increasingly into focus. Among these best BL3 weapons is the Borderlands 3 Lyuda legendary sniper rifle, though this may be about to change, as Gearbox Software has indicated that this powerful gun will be nerfed in a forthcoming update.
During a recent live stream, Eliza Melendez, the voice actor behind Tyreen Calypso, and Borderlands 3 Combat Designer Grant Kao talked about the past, present, and future of Gearbox’s new looter shooter. This conversation touched on a myriad of topics, including upcoming changes to Borderlands 3’s Vault Hunters and gear adjustments that will occur in the “coming weeks.” One of the gear pieces that was specifically noted as in need of tuning was the BL3 Lyuda sniper rifle, which Kao indicated is “definitely overperforming.”
With respect to exactly how this Borderlands 3 Lyuda nerf will manifest, that is not currently known. However, Kao did indicate that he does not want to “completely destroy [its] gameplay,” which suggests that the Lyuda will remain a powerful BL3 legendary weapon post-nerf, just not as powerful as it is currently.
Additionally, Kao cited the Borderlands 3 Hellwalker legendary shotgun as another weapon in need of a nerf. While the Hellwalker does not come up as frequently as the Lyuda in conversations about the best legendary weapons in Borderlands 3, it seems that Gearbox believes it to be too strong in its current state, and fans should expect to see the weapon adjusted in the future.
When it comes to why Gearbox is interested in nerfing these weapons, Kao indicated that one of the developer’s primary goals is to “create increased build diversity” within Borderlands 3. When a weapon is obviously more powerful than the rest, it has the potential to push the playerbase toward a small number of Borderlands 3 builds, which is exactly what Gearbox hopes to avoid. Furthermore, Kao suggest that nerfs are not the only way the developer will encourage diversity moving forward, stating that there are “one hundred other legendaries that need adjustments” in the other direction.
Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
