Borderlands 3 players are hungering for new content. As great as the Bloody Harvest has been, vault hunters can only take so much ghostbusting. Gearbox Software is on top of it, however, prepping two big content updates in the relatively near future. The Takedown at Maliwan’s Blacksite update launches tomorrow, November 21, with a massive new update, to start. But it’s Borderlands 3’s first big premium story expansion that players really want. Gearbox has all of the new info on that, too, including its release date.
Introducing Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, which will be Borderlands 3’s first premium story DLC expansion. As the name implies, the expansion tasks players to infiltrate the Handsome Jackpot, which is Handsome Jack’s still-running casino which itself is found on Handsome Jack’s cruise spaceship. Within the casino are all manner of mysteries, as well as a ton cash and loot. The expansion will feature a range of story missions and side missions for players to play through.
As part of the announcement of Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, Gearbox did confirm the DLC’s release date. One might assume that, given Takedown at Maliwan’s Blacksite is launching so soon, Moxxi’s Heist might be quite a ways off. That’s not the case. Gearbox Software is going to turn around and release this new expansion in a relatively short while after Maliwan. Players can pick up Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot starting December 19.
Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot is, of course, just the first of several premium expansions planned for Borderlands 3. In addition to Moxxi’s Heist, there are currently 3 more story-based expansions planned for the game. No information has been shared regarding the future expansions, but they’re speculated to be released across 2020. If Gearbox is starting by going to Handsome Jack’s space cruise ship, who knows where it’ll go next.
Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford went on the official weekly Borderlands Show livestream to talk about Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot, among other things. He came across as very excited for the expansion, noting that creating expansions is a much more freeing experience than developing the base game. For one, the game’s already a huge success, so there’s less risk. Second, the expansion is in a part of the universe, a cruise ship of all places, where Gearbox can get experimental have a lot of fun. Hopefully, Moxxi’s Heist is exactly what fans, and Gearbox, want from Borderlands 3.
Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
