The Borderlands 3 January 16 hotfix is now live, and it has given fans a number of reasons to load up their Vault Hunters and dive back into Gearbox Software’s newest looter shooter. These reasons include a new event, the Borderlands 3 Farming Frenzy, which temporarily increases the drop rates of Legendary and Anointed gear, and another that adds scaling to Takedown at Maliwan’s Blacksite. Additionally, Gearbox has just released a brand new Shift Code, which players can now redeem for three Golden Keys.
This new Borderlands 3 Shift Code was recently shared by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford on his official Twitter account, and it is as follows: WBC3T-5JH99-XTWZ5-9BKB3-BT63Z. While occasionally Shift Codes will expire 24 hours after their release, this one is active until 10am CST on Monday, January 20, which means that players have the entire weekend to redeem it and claim their Golden Keys.
For the uninitiated, BL3 Shift Codes can be redeemed both in-game and through Gearbox’s website. Once a player has entered a Shift Code, they will find Golden Keys in their Borderlands 3 mailbox, and they can then use these keys to open the Golden Chest in Sanctuary 3 for free loot.
Golden Keys are not the only things that BL3 Shift Codes can grant, though, as the developer has previously used them as a way for players to claim special gear and cosmetics. At the end of last year, for example, the Borderlands 3 Gifts of Mayhem event featured several Shift Codes that granted ECHO skins, weapon trinkets, and more. While those codes have since expired, players that want access to unique cosmetics should be sure to keep an eye out for more in the future.
In a time when many developers have turned to microtransactions and battle passes as ways to engage communities, Gearbox’s approach may feel somewhat unique. Indeed, the developer has given fans boundless free loot with these Shift Codes and has also provided free post-launch content in the form of Borderlands 3’s Bloody Harvest event and beyond. While Gearbox does charge for the game’s full story DLCs, it has looked to keep fans playing in other ways as well, and that trend is set to continue in 2020.
Borderlands 3 is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
