Bookbound Brigade is a game that combines elements of The Wonderful 101 with the Metroidvania format, leaving the player to control a group of literary and historical figures as they battle evil. It has some tricky puzzles, but there is at least one in the Dominion of Empires that TheGamer can help you bypass.

One of the early puzzles in Bookbound Brigade involves the player being locked in a tomb within the Dominion of Empires dungeon. The people who remember the ending of the original Alex Kidd game on the Sega Master System might be having flashbacks when they enter this room, and there is no way to leave (short of resetting the game) without completing the puzzle.

The objective of the puzzle is to enter the doors in the order that matches the five torches in the center of the room. The switch in the middle of the room changes the torches on top of each door to either green or purple, and it also changes the length of each flame. The switch at the bottom of the room changes the partitions on the top floor, allowing access to different rooms.

In order to proceed, the player needs to enter the rooms in a certain order while the flames above them are a specific color.

  • The first door they need to enter is the one in the center of the top row when the light is green. The second is on the far right of the top row when the light is green. The third is the middle door on the bottom row when the light is purple. The fourth door is one left from the center door on the top row when the light is green. The fifth and final door is on the far right of the bottom row when the light is purple.

The player will then appear in the room in the top left corner, which has a switch that will unlock the room in the bottom right corner. The picture above has the doors numbered in the order that the player should enter them, along with a letter signifying the color they need to be (“G” for green and “P” for purple).

Bookbound Brigade has some tricky puzzles and the fact that the player cannot leave straight away makes the five lights room one that is particularly annoying, especially since the nearest checkpoint is behind another lengthy puzzle. Bookbound Brigade is an entertaining Metroidvania and we hope that any frustrating puzzles don’t deter people’s enthusiasm for trying out the game.

Bookbound Brigade will be released for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 4 on January 30, 2020.
