With the Covid-19 pandemic worsening around the globe, it’s a wonder that this is the first time in a while a developer has cited it as a reason for delay. Bloober Team, the horror-centric studio behind 2017’s Observer and 2019’s Blair Witch Project, has delayed its latest title, The Medium from an unspecified day this December to the much more specific date of January 28, 2021.

Announced in a post on the official Twitter page for The Medium, the delay “wasn’t an easy choice to make, but one made due to the Covid-19 situation in Poland, as well as the current schedule of other games on the market.” In Poland, the Covid-19 pandemic has been worsening, with the country’s President recently contracting the virus himself. It’s just as well that the title Bloober Team is likely referring to there is Cyberpunk 2077, which was recently delayed from November 19 to December 10. This would make The Medium the second game to cite the new release date of CD Projekt Red’s upcoming title as a reason for delay, the first being Path of Exile.

What is The Medium?

Regardless of why the game has been delayed, Bloober will use the time to “add further polish” and “deliver our innovative, genre-pushing vision of interactive psychological horror.” Updates on the game will continue to come from Bloober Team as The Medium‘s new release date approaches.

For those new to The Medium, it is a psychological horror title that places players in the shoes of Marrianne, a medium that can travel between the worlds of the living and the dead. Using this supernatural ability, players have to guide Marianne through puzzles in both worlds, sometimes interacting with both simultaneously. To ensure that players feel like they are in two worlds, there will be points where the screen splits, showing Marrianne interacting with both at the same time.
