There is still hope! Despite the belief that we might not see the long awaited release of Diablo 3 until at least 2012, Blizzard revealed in a recent interview that we could see the third installment sooner than we think.

Fans have been waiting for more of the Diablo universe since the 2000 release of Diablo 2 and its 2001 expansion, Lord of Destruction. Since the announcement of the third installment, the game has been teased with artwork, trailers and screenshots online and demonstrated at Blizzard’s own BlizzCon - only exponentially increasing the eagerness of the fans.

Between the released screenshots and the public hands-on demos, the masses have agreed that the game visually appears good to go, but it’s unanimously known that Blizzard will ship a project when it’s ready. That said, there still hasn’t been a specific timeframe confirmed - not even a year.

The good news is we can now raise an optimistic eyebrow thanks to Jay Wilson, director of the Diablo 3. Wilson recently spoke with New York Times about the game and gave a tidbit of promising information:

We aren’t far into 2011, so there is a decent possibility of seeing Diablo 3 hit shelves within this calendar year, especially if they are just adding the final touches and tweaks.

We’re definitely in the home stretch. We’re crunching. This is when the magic happens.

Although Wilson did not confirm a specific release date, BlizzCon 2011 is approaching (October 21-22) and it would make sense for them to choose that venue to announce a solidified date.

If they are looking at 2011, an announcement at this year’s BlizzCon would put the game in a Q4 release where heavy hitters such as Skyrim, Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3 reside.

Diablo 3 is slated for a release on PC and Mac, and there are still hints about the possibility of Diablo 3 on consoles.
