Although late for spooky season, officially ending with October 31st every year, developer Bloober Team today unveiled the release date for the physical copy of Blair Witch. The horror game, based on the eponymous movie, will hit the shelves in its physical form (which, in this context, sounds creepier than it should) on January 31st, 2020, for PlayStation 4,m and Xbox One.

If you’ve seen the original film from 1999, you know that the story follows “recovered footage” from three young students who explored a forest in Maryland to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch in 1994. Spoiler alert: the three disappear, and the game is set a year after their footage was recovered, i.e. two years after the movie’s events. It follows the story of the former police officer Ellis Lynch, who joins the search for a missing boy in the same woods, called the Black Hills Forest– but nobody wants him there for unknown reasons, except for his dog, who is a very useful tool for the player to find important quest items.

First reported by TGG, the Polish team behind the game decided to start off the upcoming year by releasing physical copies of their game for consoles. The game was previously released for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One on August 30th, 2019, and was later added to the Xbox Game Pass. The general consensus is mixed: although more than sufficiently scary, the game also relies a lot on jumpscares which is definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, and many consider the mechanics lacking. One of its redeeming features is the dog, Bullet, and the press release answers the most important question of all: yes, you can pet the dog.
