Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has become the biggest entertainment launch of the year, Activision has announced, generating a worldwide revenue of $550m within its first three days on sale.
While sales figures have not been announced, Activision says that retail sales are “up significantly” over both 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts and 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, with digital sales said to be “nearly double” those of last year.
The game has also been played “for more hours per player than any Call of Duty game on record,” according to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, with over 75 million hours played online during the first three days.
“Call of Duty’s millions of passionate fans have shown us, yet again, the strength of their commitment to this enduring franchise,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. “Call of Duty: Black Ops III is the biggest entertainment launch this year in any medium, and bigger than any theatrical opening weekend ever.”
Activision chose not to release opening sales figures for last year’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare but, for comparison, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, which launched back in November 2012, generated over $500m in revenue within its first 24 hours.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 launched on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC last Friday.
