Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine, via GamesRadar, Creative Director Mac Walters has said that Mass Effect: Andromeda’s conversation system will not be based upon the Paragon/Renegade system seen in the series’ previous three entries.

Walters stated that the decision to change from the red/blue dialogue wheel seen in other Mass Effect titles to something else was down to the fact that Paragon and Renegade ‘were very tied to the Shepard character, so they didn’t really make sense if we weren’t going to have Shepard as our protagonist.’

‘What we have now is based more around agreeing and disagreeing. The reason I like that is because in the trilogy it’s like, ‘I’m gonna play Paragon,’ and then you know which way you’re moving the stick on every conversation,’ explained Walters.

To be fair, Walters isn’t wrong. Mass Effect has always rewarded players for being the best nice/bad guy they can be, but this new system, which revolves around agreeing and disagreeing, sounds a bit more nuanced.

‘With agree and disagree it changes by the circumstance and it changes by the character you’re talking to, so you have to actually be more engaged in what’s going on, to know if you’re going to do that,’ which makes it sound like the things you say will have a more natural flow to them and won’t boil down to you either being an asshole or the most caring person in the world.

As well as that, Walters added that characters will be able to respond in one of four different tones of voice before saying ‘I think that gets back to that more traditional role-playing sort of feeling which is less about ‘Do I want to be good or bad,’ and more about ‘How do I want to express myself?’

Mass Effect: Andromeda is out on March 21 in North America and March 23 in Europe and will be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
