The 2020 season of the Overwatch League is finally here and the opening weekend provided some amazing matches, insane highlights and a plethora of star power. It was a wonderful look into the upcoming season with truly star players shining– either as part of a new team or dominating like last year. Here are some of the best players throughout the opening weekend of the Overwatch League.
Hong-joon “HOTBA” Choi (New York Excelsior)
HOTBA made his debut with the New York Excelsior to dazzling results. He brings a new level of aggressive play to an Excelsior team used to playing passive and rarely is out of position. He essentially saved New York a few times with his insane D.Va bombs. It was a legendary start for the new off-tank of the NYXL and he won over the home crowd with deafening applause. He fits into the Excelsior roster perfectly and will be huge for them throughout the rest of the season.
Gui-un “Decay” Jang (Dallas Fuel)
It was unfortunate start for the Dallas fuel in front of their home crowd. They dropped their first match 3-1 against an unproven Valiant team and had to face the San Francisco Shock to end their weekend, once again losing 3-1. A shining spot in an otherwise uninspired start was the play of Decay. He is a superstar damage dealer coming from the Gladiators and will be the star for the Fuel all season. His play on McCree over the weekend was possibly the best in the league and he will need to continue to play at a high level if the Fuel want to compete this season.
Hyojong “Haksal” Kim (Vancouver Titans)
Haksal was the Rookie of the Year for the 2019 season and he came out on fire during the Titans’ first two matches. Vancouver thrived in a dive comp largely due to the inspired Genji play from Haksal who basically got value from every Dragonblade he used. Playing Genji is tough in the current state of the game, but Haksal made it look extremely easy. He was great on Mei too. His versatility and explosiveness were impressive throughout opening weekend and it’s safe to assume he will keep performing at this level all season. Vancouver has all the pieces for another run at the Grand Finals.
Kai “KSP” Collins (Los Angeles Valiant)
The Los Angeles Valiant signed a lot of fresh faces for the 2020 season and it looks like at least one of them is paying off big time right from the start. KSP looked amazing on his DPS role and was a big factor in the Valiant’s strong win over the Dallas Fuel in a hostile crowd. His hitscan flexibility shredded the Fuel with top-tier performances on Widowmaker and McCree especially. This Valiant team looked stronger than many expected and while the dropped 3-0 against the Titans, they show promise and a new star in the form of KSP.
This is only the beginning for the 2020 campaign, and while a lot of players shined bright during the opening weekend, there are still a ton of amazing talent left to play in the upcoming weeks. If this top-level of play continues, it will be a good year for fans of the Overwatch League.
