Captain Marvel star Ben Mendelsohn tends to say exactly what he’s thinking at all times. The man does not have a filter, which is absolutely fine with us if he keeps delivering quotes like the ones he just gave Metro.
The Rogue One villain, who has been hard at work leading a forthcoming Stephen King adaptation for HBO called The Outsider, was recently asked about Disney and Sony’s brief falling out over the future of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the MCU, and he was in typically honest form, declaring that losing Spider-Man “would have been a disaster.”
“I think what happens in these things is, most of the time, cooler heads prevail,” he said. “Sometimes we end up in a situation which feels like it’s going to be the lead up to World War I. But s*** man. You can’t lose Spider-Man from the Marvel universe. He’s one of their absolute motherf***ing pornstars.” Incredible.
He continued: “Boy, I could name 30 that you could quite comfortably lose before you start thinking about losing Spider-Man. In fact, I cannot think of a single character who’s more important to Marvel than Spider-Man. You’ve got Hulk, you’ve got Thor… none of them are as important as Spider-Man. None of them.”
Just pausing to imagine Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo responding to this with ‘man_blinking.gif’.
Mendelsohn played scene-stealing Skrull leader Talos in Marvel’s standalone Carol Danvers intro film, which scored over a billion dollars at the box office and is almost certainly heading for a sequel. He also stars opposite Timothee Chalamet in Netflix’s The King, which has received mixed reviews so far, but it’s fair to say Mendelsohn is up there with Chalamet’s biggest fans.

“He’s not copying anyone else, he’s a better movie star than we deserve. We don’t actually deserve, I think, such a beautiful fing movie star, such a beautiful male movie star, that you can see and feel, you experience him as he’s doing it. You want to be him but you can’t be him. You want to be somewhere in his proximity. He’s a very magnetic person. Timmy was very reverential without being a dk about any of it,” he enthused, adding “He’s doing f**ing well and long may he reign. It’s a delight to see people get that movie star buzz around him. I have never heard audiences clamour and scream for anyone in my working life the way they clamour and scream for Timmy. And I love that.”
Sorry, but imagining Mendelsohn saying “Timmy” in that thick Aussie accent has made our week.
