Bandai Namco has revealed more gameplay details for its action RPG Code Vein. This news gives players a deeper insight into the game’s battle system, and more information on the character creation options within the game.
Players can create their own unique protagonist, choosing their gender, body and hair styles to the voice of the character (though sadly there’ll be no Morgan Freeman or Vin Diesel-esque vocal options). Bandai Namco has also shared some more details on two companions that’ll appear in the game. First up we have Louis, a young leader that helps Revenants suffering from bloodlust. He’s searching Vein for the source of Blood Beads, which can be used as a replacement for human blood. Io is a lady Revenant who has no memory of the past, but she knows Vein like the back of her hand. She’s like a blood-sucking Google map of the underworld and pretty helpful.
Code Vein’s battle system has a few layers to it that players will need to exploit in order to progress. The gift system lets players use up to eight gifts in a battle, granting them a temporary increase in attack or defence. Gifts can be acquired from special items and gear found in the game. Combat is stamina-based, and a special drain can be performed when a player successfully parries an enemy’s attacks. Think of it as a combat boost and you’re on the right track. The focus system is essentially a temporary ability boost, best used to dodge attacks from multiple enemies, giving players the chance to respond better in tense situations. Finally, the partner action gives players a little bit of support, if the player’s health gets to a low state the companion will heal, and they can also provide battle support.
Code Vein is a vampire themed action-RPG, and is already being compared to Dark Souls based on elements of the gameplay. The game puts players into the role of a Revenant, who’s trying to escape from the world of Vein, which is basically purgatory for vampires.
Code Vein is due to release in 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
