Back in February 2017, Ubisoft announced that it was working on a AAA video game adaptation of Avatar, the feature film from director James Cameron. It’s been three years since that announcement and considering the silence on the film side and lack of a sequel after many years, it seemed safe to assume that the game was also quietly canceled. As it turns out, that assumption was ill-placed, as Ubisoft looks toward the future.
Recently, a fan took to Twitter to ask if the Avatar video game was still being developed. To everyone’s surprise, the official Twitter handle for the franchise tweeted back positively. The game is, in fact, still under development by Massive Entertainment, known for the likes of Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 and South Park: The Fractured But Whole.
When gamers last heard, Ubisoft wasn’t expecting Avatar before April 2020, but the complete lack of press is what led some to think the game was canceled. Considering it was already eight years after the movie had released, there was confusion about announcing a game connected to the first film. And with Avatar 2 still a few years away, the buzz around Avatar as a franchise was dying down. Now, it may be a safe assumption that the game will release during the next generation of consoles with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett.
Other than the game’s existence, we know next to nothing about the Avatar game. Ubisoft released a video that included developers talking about the world of Avatar and it being a perfect setting for a game, along with confirmation it would use the same engine as The Division and Magnus Jansen would serve as creative director.
Massive also explained that the game will not be based strictly on the film or its planned sequels, but rather the world of Avatar itself. Knowing that the game won’t simply be a playable version of the film is definitely a plus, as titles like that are usually doomed to fail.
No release date has been announced for the Avatar game.
