Atomic Heart is inching closer to release, which is set for later in the year. As Gamescom 2022 roars on, the team at Mundfish has released a combat trailer, featuring plenty of weapons and abilities you can use in the game. But it also shows off some of the game’s weirdness. Of which, there is plenty. I don’t know what’s going on with the robot ladies and their head spikes, but I certainly want to know now. It’s certainly new for a combat trailer to leave more questions than answers, but that’s where we are with Atomic Heart.

If you can ignore the stabbing, unzipping of robots in the trailer (not sure how), the combat of Atomic Heart sure looks electrifying. It’ll be a chore for players to not compare it to similar first-person games that mesh weaponry and abilities. You’ll get a whole armory of weapons in the game. Melee weapons can bash and break robots, while guns let you dish out damage from a distance. Grenade launchers, pistols, and rifles are at your disposal. There are even some sci-fi weapons thrown in.

Then, there are the abilities. A glove on your left hand lets you levitate enemies in the air or shoot water or electricity. The combat trailer showcases how you can combine everything together in Atomic Heart, and it certainly seems necessary. Enemies charge you down in waves, and some boss-like beasts definitely look rough. There’s also a dash, or quickstep, in case things get too close for comfort.

I don’t know what’s going on, but I’d sure like to

Combat in Atomic Heart is looking great, but it’s still not the most intriguing thing in the trailer. The game is set in an alternate 1950s in the Soviet Union. And, almost like with Fallout, the decade prior brought about technological wonders such as advanced robotics. Naturally, the march of progress was short-lived when the machines rose up against humanity.

“A system failure at Soviet Facility № 3826 leads machinery to rebel against the people,” reads the video’s description. “You are Major P-3, Private Agent, and your task is to minimize the consequences of this ‘systems failure’ and prevent the leakage of classified information.”

Atomic Heart doesn’t have a solid release date yet, but it should be out later this year.
