Atlanta Season 4 is officially a go at FX… you’ll just need to be patient.
FX made the news official at the Television Critics Press Association summer press tour. The preemptive confirmation of Atlanta’s fourth season will not only thrill fans of the acclaimed comedic drama, but will also address the elephant in the room regarding the 2019 truancy of Season 3, now over a year removed from the 2018 run of Season 2. That’s because FX has also confirmed that production of Season 3 AND Season 4 will commence in the spring of 2020.
The series is the creation of Donald Glover, who stars as Ernest “Earn” Marks, who is managing the burgeoning career of his rapper cousin, Alfred Miles (Bryan Tyree Henry), joined by friend Darius (Lakieth Stanfield) and Earn’s friend and baby-mama, Van (Zazie Beetz). Each cast member has seen their respective stocks rise in the industry since their involvement with the 2016-launched series. Glover serves as executive producer alongside his brother, Stephen, joined in that capacity by Paul Simms, Dianne McGunigle and Hiro Murai.
Atlanta Season 4 Release Date
Atlanta Season 4 is set to arrive on FX sometime in the fall of 2021.
That news came straight from FX CEO John Landgraf at the winter TCAs, where he revealed that Atlanta Season 3 won’t arrive until around January 2021 (extending the show’s current hiatus to three years), set to be followed-up with Season 4 in the last quarter.
Atlanta Season 4 Details
The fourth season of Atlanta will manifest with an 8-episode run, representing a reduction from Season 3’s 10-episode order. However, FX is treating Seasons 3 and 4 as “Parts 1 and 2” of a new unified chapter of the series.
As Eric Schrier, president of FX Entertainment, lauds of the renewal:
While not exactly a ratings juggernaut, Atlanta has reaped its share of riches in the awards circuit, with Season 1 garnering six Emmy nominations, winning for two comedy series categories – Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Directing – both for Glover. Moreover, Season 2 yielded several more nods and three more wins, bringing it to a current total of five Emmy wins out of 22 nods.
It will be interesting to see what the announced spring production for Seasons 3 and 4 will mean for the far-future of Atlanta, especially as Glover’s star only continues to rise.
