The Assassin’s Creed franchise is nothing if not unpredictable but what fans can usually expect is some sort of leak (or leaks) to surface well before the next game is ready for its official debut. It has happened with almost every Assassin’s Creed in recent memory and now the leaks are coming fast and furious for Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok.
As the name implies, Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok will take players to a Nordic setting and put them in control of a male or female Viking assassin. On top of gameplay details, though, the leaks also confirmed a couple different special editions for the game.
Like many Assassin’s Creed games (or even Ubisoft games in general), Ragnarok will offer a handful of different special editions for players to buy, but the one that should be the most eye catching is called the Mjolnir Edition. Because these listings appeared and were then promptly taken down, it’s impossible to know what exactly the Mjolnir Edition of Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok officially includes but fans have their guesses.
Perhaps the most exciting proposition is the possibility that the Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok Mjolnir Edition will include a life-size replica of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Media enthusiasts are likely well acquainted with Mjolnir thanks to the Marvel films, but the mythical hammer has begun to appear in the video game world as well. Obviously, the upcoming Marvel Avengers game lets players wield Mjolnir as Thor but God of War also offered a brief look at Sony Santa Monica’s version of the iconic weapon in a post-credits scene.
As far as what Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok will bring to the table with its rendition of Mjolnir, there is no official word from Ubisoft just yet. Considering that the developer is willing to create a whole special edition around the item, there is the hope that it is something cool, but Ubisoft could also just be using Nordic buzz words to name its limited edition versions of the game. One of the other versions, for example, is called the Valhalla Edition.
However, assuming Mjolnir appears in some form in the game, then it seems like Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok is building off the fantastical elements of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. While the AC series has never been rooted in reality, it did try to work within a more grounded logic. But Odyssey took things to a new level by introducing boss fights with some of the mythical beasts from Greek legend like Medusa and the Minotaur. It’s possible that Ragnarok is doing a similar thing, but using Nordic gods.
Assuming the rumors are true, all should be made clear next month when Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok is believed to make its official debut. Sony is expected to officially reveal the PS5 console (i.e. show off the box) and Ubisoft is rumored to be one of the developers on-hand to show off its game running on the platform.
Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok is rumored for a September 2020 release on PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
