At a hands on with Assassin’s Creed Origins we were able to explore a little of the new open world of Egypt. It has a day and night cycle, and weather (within the confines of the weather you’d see in Egypt i.e. you probably won’t run into a snowstorm). But this cycle also affects the NPCs and wildlife to create a persistent open world.

A member of the development team confirmed that you’ll run into different animals in different regions, also depending on the time of day. NPCs work in a similar way: they get up, go to work, come home to sleep, and so on. You’ll come across boats on the river and Bayek can commandeer them or, equally, can sit down and go wherever the NPC was heading.

We went to get a closer look at a hippopotamus in the water, and when we arrived it was engaged in a battle with a crocodile. The hippo one, and proceeded to chase us through a cloud of the crocodile’s blood. The developer swore up and down that it wasn’t planned.

Sobek should steer clear of Taweret, am I right, Egyptian deity fans?

Assassin’s Creed Origins is out for PS4, PC and Xbox One on October 27.
