The next Apple flagship series entrant —the iPhone 14 —is expected to arrive later this year with a whole set of new features, including a brand-new design, new camera systems, upgraded processors, and probably some fresh new colors.
Here are all details we know so far about the iPhone 14 release date, rumors, and specs of Apple’s upcoming flagship smartphone.
When will the Apple iPhone 14 Release Date Be?
Normally, new flagship iPhones are unveiled and released in September, except for the iPhone 12, which was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pre-orders for the iPhone 13 series last year started on Friday, September 17, and the phones went on sale on September 24. On Tuesday, September 14, the phones made their official premiere.
Apple may have its fall event for the iPhone 14 on either Tuesday, September 6, or Tuesday, September 13.
What will the iPhone 14 Be Called?
Given that the iPhone 13 was the model’s name released in 2021, we anticipate the 2022 iPhone to be the iPhone 14. Whether Apple switches back to the “S” branding is unknown, although rumors suggest the 2022 iPhone will be a significant upgrade to merit a new number entirely.
It’s also conceivable that Apple will completely do away with the iPhone line’s numerical designations and instead use the terms “Pro” or “non-Pro,” and year to identify new iPhone models. This would be consistent with Apple’s changes to the iPad line-up over the past few years.
The identities of Apple’s marketing campaigns are kept secret until the very end. This means that to discover more about what will be released in 2022, we’ll have to wait.
Expected Features of the Apple iPhone 14
The iPhone 14 is rumored to have all of the following features and specs:
- No notchLightning portImproved cameraTitanium frameUpgraded processors
No Notch
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to ditch the notch on the iPhone 14. A notch is a cutout at the top of a screen that contains the front camera, earpiece, sensors, and other components.
It allows manufacturers to make a phone look more modern by not having a large black bar at the top of the screen. Some users have complained about it for years, and Apple has finally decided to ditch it.
Instead, Apple will relocate the front-facing camera to a centered hole punch cutout at the top of the panel, much like we’ve seen on several Android phones. However, there are now conflicting details regarding the revised notch design.
Lightning Port
There have been rumors for years that Apple would release a port-less iPhone. This iPhone would be entirely wireless and would not have a Lightning port. It was initially predicted that this would happen in 2021. However, that did not occur.
Apple is reportedly still testing a port-free iPhone, but it won’t be available for several more years. In fact, it’s anticipated that Apple will convert to USB-C in 2023. However, the Lightning port will continue to be used in the upcoming iPhone 14.
Also, it is said that beginning with the iPhone 14 Pro this fall, Apple will increase Lightning data transfer rates to USB 3.0. 480 Mbps transfer rates are supported by USB 2.0, and 5 Gbps transfer rates are supported by USB 3.0.
Improved Camera
A key component of the iPhone’s identity is its camera. Due to size restrictions, the smaller iPhone will likely maintain a twin camera system. At the same time, the larger models are likely to retain their current wide, ultrawide, and telephoto zoom configurations.
Reports indicate that the Pro and Pro Max will use 48MP main cameras with 8K video capabilities. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has once more verified the assertion that Pro models will include a 48MP sensor.
In either case, Apple is playing catch-up when it comes to raw megapixels and video recording resolution. Expectations are high for these two capabilities because the company has a reputation for providing excellent camera software and best-in-class video capture.
Titanium Frame
The Apple iPhone 14 will have a titanium frame, which is an aluminum alloy. This will make the phone stronger than its predecessors, and it will also make the phone lighter than ever before. It’s also more durable and resistant to scratches.
Upgraded Processors
Every new iPhone generation comes with a chip upgrade. Apple is anticipated to solely upgrade the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to its most recent chipset for the first time ever. While the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will continue to use the same A15 CPU seen in the current iPhone 13 series, these two models are anticipated to receive an upgrade to the A16 processor.
The A16 Bionic and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 modem could be used to enable satellite connectivity on the iPhone 14.
When cellular service is unavailable, iPhone users can send and report difficulties via short messages if they are included. At the earliest, a satellite connection for the iPhone is anticipated to arrive in 2022. According to reports, the A16 Bionic will be equipped with 6GB of memory for the iPhone 14 regular models and up to 8GB of memory for the Pro ones.
iPhone 14 Price Prediction: What to Expect
Apple has a propensity to settle on a price point and remain with it for a while. Though it is uncommon to witness a significant price adjustment, market movements and exchange rates can occasionally impact iPhone pricing. The “iPhone 14” will probably be priced fairly similarly to the iPhone 13, given Apple’s prior pricing methods. However, the initial price would be $799 if no minis were available.
With a price of $899, which is just under the pro pricing of $999, the “iPhone 14 Max” would occupy a new middle price tier. That is unless Apple decides to reduce the “iPhone 14” to the $699 entry-level iPhone 13 mini due to the cheaper component costs in this iteration.
However, the iPhone 14 Pro may cost $1,099, an increase of $100 from the $999 iPhone 13 Pro. And the price of the iPhone 14 Pro Max might rise similarly, reaching $1,199.
