Apex Legends unveiled its Season 3 trailer, offering insight into major map changes and the game’s new character, Crypto.
However, there’s one minor detail that left some fans shaking. It has to do with Bloodhound’s pet bird, Arthur.
It’s easy to miss. But for those paying close attention, a single phrase in the video cuts deep.
In the trailer, at around 1:10, Bloodhound raises their gun before saying the words, “For Arthur.” They then shoot and kill the game’s lovable robot, Pathfinder.
Bloodhound’s tone as they say “For Arthur” implies that the bird may soon no longer be around.
This is, of course, devastating, not only because it’s sad for anyone to lose a pet, but also because of the bird’s special meaning to this unique character.
In Apex Legends lore, the mysterious Bloodhound is more spiritual than other competitors in the Apex Games. They seek to honor “The Allfather” and draw upon inspiration from Earth’s Old Norse Gods. These propensities, when taken together, make it unsurprising they would have such a close connection with an animal such as a bird.
Interestingly, there’s a bird in Bloodhound’s cabin on the dropship in the trailer’s opening. But birds of the same species can look an awful lot alike, and there’s nothing there that would indicate that this bird is, in fact, Arthur.
If players don’t see Arthur in Season 3, another character may be to blame. And if this is true, it may also mean Bloodhound is out for revenge.
In the aforementioned opening scene of the trailer, Bloodhound sharpens their knife. In the background, viewers can hear a warning announcement, “No weapons are allowed on the dropship.” The voice then begins to reference “Any instances of violence…” before Mirage’s voice cuts it off.
Perhaps this is more significant than one might think. Could it be possible that Bloodhound is armed and waiting for the right time to attack Arthur’s killer, a fellow competitor who is also in the dropship?
Pair this with the fact that Bloodhound says “For Arthur” while shooting at their robot competitor. This may provide another clue.
In one of Pathfinder’s funniest legendary banners, the character swats at a bird, which is believed to be Arthur.
Many considered this a take on an Overwatch character, Bastion, who also has bird-related victory poses.
One could speculate that Pathfinder’s trouble with birds goes far deeper than fending off Bloodhound’s pet.
Or, perhaps Pathfinder is a red herring. After all, before Caustic began testing his traps in the Apex Games, he tested them on other lifeforms.
A Reddit post from several months ago offers a possible theory.
“Say what you want about Caustic, but he’s the only one who can defeat Bloodhound’s crow,” the post reads. It includes an image from user MawBTS1989, who lined up the characters that had bird-related poses. In Caustic’s banner pose, the bird is down on the ground, presumably dead.
