The new hero coming to Apex Legends has been found by players in Kings Canyon during matches, as reported by VG247.
Crypto — the name fans have given the new character from datamined files — was first seen in the Battle Charge launch trailer, and a series of hints have been dropped by Respawn with each in-game event. Apex Legends producer Tina Sanchez posted photos of herself dressed in a mo-cap suit and tagged two animators in the Tweet. She was wielding what looks like a cane; Crypto was speculated to be a futuristic ronin type due to their design and this is corroborated by a datamined file called ‘DEATH_SWORD.’
Then, at the GameStop Managers Conference last month, new images leaked that showed Crypto in their characteristic white and neon green jacket, but this time holding a sidearm and accompanied by a little robot. And today, players are actually encountering Crypto in the world of Apex Legends.
Kick down a door inside the eastern area of Labs, and enter that room. In that disused research chamber, there’s a window made of protective glass showing a set of screens and computers, and Crypto is typing away at them. The drone will notice that they’re being watched, and Crypto hurriedly escapes through the exit. The screen above Crypto reveals something called the World’s Edge as the key, which looks spookily like the Titanfall space elevator.
Crypto’s drone matches the art shown of them at the GameStop Managers Conference, which confirms that the leak is accurate in that respect. The screens around Kings Canyon have also been going a little funky, and that’s been attributed to Crypto’s handiwork. Once their decryption had completed, the announcement system rebooted and it seemed that Crypto was attempting to play havoc with the ring. Respawn developers have also weighed in on the speculation, with senior designer Chin Xiang Chong cheekily asking, ‘Crypto laptop? Did we let someone install bitcoin mining software on player’s hardware again?’
The new hero will probably arrive with Season 3 of Apex Legends, but it has not been confirmed when that will be. Season 2 will end on October 1, so it’s likely that there will be an announcement around that time.
Apex Legends is out now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
