Apex Legends esports has been hit or miss over the past year. Some LAN events like the X Games showed us that the game had promise as an esport, but online kill-race tournaments have been discouraging for the competitive community. Thankfully, EA and Respawn Entertainment announced the Apex Legends Global Series today. The $3 million league begins on January 25, 2020.
The Apex Legends Global Series is a PC series. Players will of course be able to use a controller if they choose though.
How the Apex Legends Global Series works
There are four different event types for the series: online tournaments, challenger events, premier events, and Majors.
The online tournaments will serve as the entry point for players. Performing well in the online events earns Apex Legends Global Series points that qualify you for the LAN events.
Challenger events are local LAN events that focus on regional competition. Performing well here will earn you a reserved spot in an upcoming Major event.
Premier events are global events that promote competition from the best players in the world. Premiers allow players to earn advanced placement into Majors.
Lastly, Majors are the big dog of the events in the Apex Legends Global Series. There will be four Majors throughout the series. The first three Majors will have 300 of the best players from across the series fight over a $500,000 prize pool. The fourth and final Major will be for all the marbles. This event will only house the top 60 Global Series teams to compete for a prize pool of $1 million.
The Majors will use the Apex Legends Match Point system that we saw used in the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational earlier in the year.
Current schedule
The first online event will be held on January 25 and 27, 2020. Registration opens on January 11. February 29 and March 2, 2020 will also host online events to qualify for Premier Event #1.
The first Major will be on March 13-15, 2020 at Esports Stadium in Arlington, TX.
