Animal Crossing has some of the most charming characters in video game history. From dogs that serenade you with their guitars to foxes that want to con you out of all your money, this is a game series filled with interesting characters. At times it can be hard to choose which villager or even visitor we love the most. Every resident of the Animal Crossing World has its own unique dialogue and personality for you to uncover.
After some tough debating, we have created a list below of the top 10 characters in the Animal Crossing series. These are some of the characters that stick out most through the series and tend to help players complete their goals, whether it be decorating or remembering to save their progress.
Updated by Madison Lennon on March 22, 2020: Animal Crossing: New Horizons is finally out and fans are excitedly diving in to their new islands and meeting fantastic new villagers and characters. But before you get started, we thought now would be a great time to update this list about all of our favorite characters in the franchise.
With so many different villagers and special characters to keep players occupied, it can be hard to figure out who we love most, but we did our best to narrow it down to the top 15!
15 Dr. Shrunk
Dr. Shrunk is quite an eccentric character in the game as he runs Club LOL and can teach your character a number of different facial emotions and reactions, especially for usage in things like photographs. He is a pink axolotl that works as a comedian.
His name is a play on the term “shrink,” since even though he is a comedian, he is also compared to a therapist since he helps players learn how to show their emotions. He first appeared in Wild World and has since appeared in all of the Animal Crossing games, we don’t yet know if he’ll be included in New Horizons.
14 Cyrus And Reese
People fell in love with the alpaca couple Cyrus and Reese instantly when they first appeared in Animal Crossing: New Leaf running their shop Re-Tail. Cyrus has quickly become a permanent fixture in the series considering he helps players build items.
He was a pivotal part of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, for instance. Cyrus is a blue alpaca and Reese is a pink one. They’re both utterly adorable and super helpful considering they help you sell items, learn turnip prices, and of course, craft things.
13 Celeste
Celeste first appeared in Wild World and returned in City Folk. She served as the resident astronomer in your town as she got her own place in the museum, the observatory. You would be able to peer at the stars and find constellations with the help of Celeste.
She is Blathers’ little sister and fans were instantly endeared by the smaller, female owl with a little pink bow on top of her head. Her name is quite fitting since it sounds similar to “celestial” and her job is to stargaze, something she loves and is passionate about.
12 Brewster
Brewster is a barista pigeon that runs the little cafe known as The Roost. He was first introduced into the franchise in Wild World and has continued to appear in every game since.
He is very popular within the fandom and many people have even worried about whether or not he and The Roost will eventually show up in New Horizons in the future. He is a little grumpy, but once you visit him enough you can even strike up a friendship with the pigeon and he’ll go so far as adding some pigeon milk to your coffee if you like.
11 Daisy Mae
Daisy Mae is a new character introduced to New Horizons and is the granddaughter of Joan, the turnip seller. It looks like Daisy is taking over for Joan as the resident turnip stalks character in the new game.
It’s not yet clear if Joan will be in the game. Daisy Mae instantly endeared fans thanks to her adorable design. Even her permanent snot bubble hasn’t seemed to push fans away. She is a small boar that speaks with a Southern accent and walks around holding turnips on top of her head.
10 Tom Nook
Tom Nook is either your best friend or the antagonist of the series, depending on how you view the game. Tom is a tanuki, who provides the players with their first home when they start the game. You can choose to pay off your debt to Tom Nook as you play, and after each successful payoff, he will give you the option to increase the size of your home.
In the spin-off game, Happy Home Designer, the Tanuki even takes a jump into the world of home decorating. Along with his realtor expertise and ability to run a shop, Tom Nook is one of the most versatile characters in the series.
9 Redd
Redd is hands-down the shadiest character to ever grace the Animal Crossing series. From the series start on the Nintendo Gamecube, to the most recent title for 3DS, Redd has been trying to con players for years. Redd knows how to run a successful black market though, and doesn’t stick around one area for long. You can only find this notorious fox on certain days during the week.
Redd is also one of the few places that you can buy fine art paintings from, but be warned he isn’t a stranger to selling fake pieces at high prices.
8 Gracie
In the Animal Crossing world, Gracie is a celebrity known for her trending fashion. Gracie’s visits to town change throughout the series. In the first game, she will show up, and the player must wash her car to get special outfits. In later entries, she will appear to quiz the players for clothes while in City Folk, she has her own store.
In the newest game in the series New Leaf, Gracie will show up in town after you spend a set amount of money shopping. Gracie will cause unique dialogue to appear when you speak to the other villagers.
7 Mr. Resetti
Poor Mr.Resetti has lost his job in the upcoming entry in the series; still, he stays a fan favorite that will hopefully find a new gig in New Horizons. Mr. Resetti was put into the original Animal Crossing game by the developers as a joke character who lectures you every time you turn off your system without saving.
As you contentiously forgot to save, his lectures would get worse to the point where players had to manually type on responses to resume playing the game. Mr. Resetti even continued punishing players in New Leaf.
6 Isabelle
Who can’t resist the charm of Isabelle, the happy go lucky Shih Tzu. Isabelle is not only a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate now, but she used to be the mayor’s assistant in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. In the games, Isabelle loves to help with hosting the town’s in-game events and even has specific outfits for each festival.
In spin-off titles like Happy Home Designer, she is one of the special characters players can design a house for. She even lent her outfit to be used in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.
5 K.K. Slider
Since the dawn of the series, K.K. Slider has appeared to sing his way into the hearts of fans. Not only can this dog play his guitar and sing, but in New Leaf, he took up the title of D.J. K. K. In the game, players can buy music players that will allow them to play K. K. Slider songs in their home as they collect them.
This Jack Russel currently has 95 songs for players to enjoy in the latest entree in the series. We can only hope he makes a return with even more heavy-hitting music in New Horizons.
4 Able Sisters
There was no way we could pick just one of the sweet able sisters for our list, so we included both. Sable and Mabel have been important components to the series since the very first game. Mabel is the more outgoing of the two while you will have to give Sable time to warm up before she starts talking to you.
In the sister’s shop, players can design their own patterns and then use them as clothes, umbrellas, and signs within the games. The sisters also start selling bottoms for players to purchase in New Leaf.
3 Kapp ‘N
Kapp ‘N is a kappa responsible for driving the boat that takes players to the special areas in the Animal Crossing series. While on the boat with Kapp ‘N, he will sing you one of his famous sea shanties. Sadly, in City Folk, Kapp ‘N gave into the fast life and became a taxi driver who pinned for his old life at sea. This leads him to once again row a boat in the series most recent entree.
In New Leaf, Kapp ‘N even has a little family, and you can meet them each time he takes you to the games island.
2 Gulliver
Poor Gulliver just can’t seem to catch a break in the Animal Crossing series. During each entree of the games, Gulliver somehow finds himself washed up on the beach or shot down by the player. When you find him, he will awaken and present the player with an item to decorate their homes with.
In the latest entry, he makes things a touch harder by quizzing the player about the countries he has visited, the player must give him the correct answer in order to receive an item in the mail.
1 Blathers
Blathers is a knowledgeable owl who runs the museums in the series. He can be found sleeping during the day or completely alert at night. No matter what time you decide to visit Blathers, though, he is more than willing to help you identify a fossil or submit a new bug to the museum’s collection.
Blathers has a ton of dialogue within the games that pertains to the many unique specimens you can donate to the museum. In later games in the series, you will even learn that the poor owl is terrified of bugs. Even so, Blathers still does his duty to take in new specimens for the museum.
