A private beta for Atari’s upcoming ‘survival-action-horror’ Alone in the Dark: Illumination will begin tomorrow, January 29, the publisher has announced.

The beta will give players the opportunity to try out the game’s single-player Hunter campaign, although you’ll need to have pre-ordered Illumination from Steam first in order to gain access.

Judging by Atari’s wording, the beta won’t allow players to try out the online co-op, although it says that an additional beta period will be announced in the weeks leading up to the game’s launch this spring.

“With the introduction of a single-player mode with the merciless Hunter, within the first environment, the menacing Coal Mine, we are laying the foundation of Alone in the Dark: Illumination,” said Atari’s senior product lead Peter Banks. “Subsequent updates will introduce new, compelling elements building on this first beta period. The multiplayer mode will also enhance the strategic light-based gameplay, complement the diverse character capabilities, and ensure ongoing fun.”

Initially believed to be a first-person experience, Alone in the Dark: Illumination is actually a third-person co-op shooter that “reinvents the series’ game style into a terrifying, new survival-action horror experience.”

Expect to see it on PC later this year.
